theScore Masters its Golf Coverage

GOLF corporate

By Adam Sarson, Product Manager

It’s an exciting time to be a golf fan. The youth movement that started a few years ago has taken over the game, with players like Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm becoming superstars seemingly overnight. Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson are all in the prime of their careers, and veterans like Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia are playing as well as they ever have.

Oh, and that Tiger guy is back, and he not only looks healthy, but he looks like he’s ready to win tournaments again.

Here at theScore, we’ve been working hard on improving our golf section for quite some time, and we’re happy to say that we’re ready to show it off to everyone. Given everything that is going on in the golf world right now, our timing couldn’t have been better.

So, why work on golf? First, golf is our most popular non-team based sport on the app from a traffic standpoint, so it made sense to focus on it. Secondly, we’re always trying to improve our product, and the area that we identified as needing the most work was our non-team based sports, so we wanted to (pun intended) get that coverage up to par.

When you download the update, here’s what you can expect to see:

Redesigned Schedule and Tournament Pages
Our designers and developers did an incredible job putting these pages together, and they really make the golf section come alive. We have tournament specific images that really catch the eye, and once you click into a tournament, you’ll see more information than ever before. Pre-tournament field lists, tee times and player favoriting are all there, along with our editorial coverage of the PGA Tour and course information.

Player Pages
We’ve had player pages on theScore for a long time, and now golfer pages are supported too. These pages have news for each player, full season stats, tournament results and biographical information.

Push Notifications
theScore has always been known for our push notifications, and we now have them for players on the PGA Tour. Just hit the star on the tournament or player page, and you’ll see a bell shoot-out to the left. When you click the bell, you’ll be able to modify your alerts and receive updates on any player or tournament. Whether it’s breaking news or score change updates, you’ll always be updated on your favourite players or tournaments if you use our alerts.

Now, even with all of those changes, we’re still not done. Here’s what you’re going to see in the coming weeks and months:

  • Player scorecards (for the Masters, you can find hole-by-hole updates for select players pinned to the top of their Player Profile pages).
  • Full support for the European Tour and LPGA Tour
  • Match Play and Cup Play integration
  • Detailed hole scoring information
  • Tournament specific tweaks, such as weather and TV listing information

I can’t say enough about the work put in by the team at theScore to get this golf redesign out. Everyone involved did a tremendous job to get us to this point, especially with our goal of getting it out in time for the Masters. We really hope you enjoy the new experience, and if you have any questions or thoughts, don’t hesitate to reach out to us via our in-app support.
