Describe the culture of theScore in one word.
Laid back. The atmosphere is awesome. We have ping pong, sports on TV, foosball, and beer kegs. The people are great too. Everybody is a diehard sports fan which means we all have a lot in common with each other. You definitely can’t say that about most offices.
What was the main thing that drew you to working at theScore?
The ability to cover college sports full time. There’s nowhere else in Canada that devotes as much resources to college sports.
What do you most look forward to as theScore continues to develop, both in the immediate future and long term?
For the immediate future, football season is coming up which is the best time to be around here. Football season, FedEx Cup, start of the NBA season, and baseball playoffs all happen at the same time in the fall which is always exciting. The change to the sports betting laws in the States is also huge because I do a lot of the betting content here. I think we are going to have an increased focus on betting this year which is good for me. Over the longer term I’m excited to see the innovations that the app continues to make and to see what else we can get involved in here.
What’s the best “perk” of working at theScore?
Basically I get paid to watch sports which is something I’d be doing anyway. The work atmosphere here also makes it feel like I’m never really coming to work. It feels more like I’m coming to watch sports with buddies and the fact that I get paid for it is a bonus.
What qualities does a person need to work at theScore?
Adaptability. In sports you never know what is going to happen so when you come in for a shift you have to be prepared for anything.
Do you follow any particular sports/esports/team?
Florida Gators and Manchester United. United because I got a jersey for my birthday when I was seven and I wore it to school and a kid in my class from England had the same shirt on. Florida Gators is a bit of a long story. I grew up near the University of Michigan so everybody in my hometown supported them but I found them very boring. In the fall of 1995 I turned on the Florida Gators vs. University of Tennessee game and it was a shootout between Danny Wuerffel and Peyton Manning. The game ended 62-37 which seemed like more points than you’d see in an entire Big 10 football season. After that I was totally drawn in by the Southern Football culture.
What are your favorite apps other than theScore?
Twitter for sure. 18Birdies is awesome for when you’re on the golf course. Spotify. Stitcher.
What is your motto or personal mantra?
It’s not possible to play too much golf.
What is one thing on your bucket list which you haven’t achieved yet?
Play golf in Scotland on The Old Course at St. Andrews.
